You do not have to be on camera to get customers. You do have to be findable. Here is why, in four numbers.
1. There are 23.4 million Kenyans online
That is about 40 out of every 100 people in the country, and it grew by 2.1 million in a year. There are also 77.5 million mobile connections here, which is more than one for every person. Source: DataReportal, Digital 2026 Kenya.
2. Almost 97 out of 100 searches happen on Google
StatCounter put Google at 96.72 percent of the Kenyan search market in August 2026. Bing was 2.57 percent. Everything else was noise. In practice, being found in Kenya means being found on Google.
3. 76 out of 100 people who search for something nearby visit a business that same day
Google research on mobile search behaviour found that 76 percent of people who search on a phone for something nearby visit a business within a day. This is not slow browsing. It is someone about to buy.
4. 28 out of 100 of those searches end in a purchase
From the same Google research. So roughly one in four local searches turns into money spent somewhere. The only question is whose till it goes into.
What this means for you
Think about what a person is really doing when they type something.
Someone typing gynaecologist in Nairobi is not reading for interest. She is worried and she wants an appointment today.
Someone typing movers in Kilimani is moving this week. He will message three companies and go with whoever replies first with a number.
Someone typing oxygen concentrator price in Kenya has a sick relative at home and money ready. They only want the price.
None of those people are looking for entertainment. They have already decided to buy. They are only deciding from whom.
So where does social fit
18.4 million Kenyans use social media. It is real and it works, especially for brand and for things people buy on impulse. Founder led content builds trust fast.
But it demands your time forever, and it reaches people who were not looking for you. Search reaches people at the exact moment they want what you sell, and a page you write once can keep bringing customers for years.
Do both if you enjoy both. If you do not enjoy being on camera, do not. Search does not require you to perform.
